A king was so proud that he always knew the right time to begin everything. If he knew who were the right people to listen to, and whom to avoid: he also knew that what was the most important thing to do -he would never fail in anything One day,he proclaimed throughout his kingdom that he would give a high reward to anyone who would teach him what was the right time for every action, and who were the necessary people, and how he might know what was the most important thing to do. So many learned men came and answered differently . Regarding the first question, some said that to remember the right time for every action, one must draw up in advance -one must live strictly according to it -only doing this, said they, could everything be done at its proper time. Others told that it was impossible to decide beforehand -the right time for every action Others again said that however attentive the king might be to what was going on ,it was impossible for one man to decide correctly the right time for every action Then they suggested to contact a council of wise men But they could not wait to be laid before a council One must know beforehand what was going to happen ,it is only magicians who know that -one must consult magician . To the third question ,some replied that most important thing was science ,Others said it was skill in warfare ,and others again said -it was religious worship . All the answers being different ,the king agreed with none of them and no one was able to get the reward The king decided to consult a hermit ,renowned for his wisdom . The hermit lived in a wood so the king left his bodyguard and went alone. The hermit was digging -seeing the king ,he greeted him and went on digging . The king said “I have come to you to answer three questions The hermit listened the question but answered nothing,”You are tired “said the king “Let me take the spade and work awhile for you”When he had dug two beds ,the king stopped and repeated his questions . The hermit again gave no answer I came to you for an answer -you give me none now I will return home .”Here comes someone running -said the hermit . They saw a bearded man running out of the wood -blood was flowing from his stomach, he fell fainting The king washed the wound and rebandaged The king was so tired that he fell asleep “Forgive me”Said the bearded man in a weak voice “I do not know you -said the king. .I know you, I am that enemy of yours who swore to revenge himself on you, because you executed his brother and seized his property,I knew that you had gone alone to see the hermit, so I resolved to kill you on your way back but the day passed, and you didn’t return Your bodyguard recognized me and wounded me . I wished to kill you ,and you have saved The king became very glad and promised to restore his property . The king, wanted the answer from the hermit :You have already been answered-said the hermit, digging the bed was the most critical time, and I was the most important man and when that man ran to us, the most critical time was when you were attending him No man knows whether he will ever have dealings with anyone else and the most important affair is ,to do him right, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life ,Remember an excellent poem-Good timber. The tree that never had to fight -For sun and sky and air and light, but stood out in the open plain, and always got its share of rain.
